Ayr United vs Airdrieonians

Saturday 12th September 2009
All-square at Ayr Strugglers Ayr and Airdrie shared the spoils in an entertaining 1-1 draw that could have been won by either side. Airdrie raced ahead after nine minutes thanks to Scott Gemmill`s spectacular overhead-kick from Frankie Legana`s free-kick. Ayr's Willie Easton had a shot blocked by the legs of Stephen Robertson shortly afterwards as the home side went in search of an immediate response. They were unable to find a way through in the first period but Ayr's pressure paid off three minutes after the interval when Ryan Stevenson cut the ball back and Mark Roberts turned to curl a sweet shot inside the post. Airdrie almost regained the lead when Gemmill's shot took a deflection off Ayr defender Kevin James and struck the post. And Gemmill's fellow goalscorer Roberts was also denied by the woodwork when he crashed a header against the crossbar 13 minutes from time.
