Morton vs Airdrieonians

Defeat puts Airdrie on brink

Morton hammered a nail in Airdrie's relegation coffin by extending their lead over the North Lanarkshire club to 11 points with a 2-1 win.

The hosts were in the ascendancy from the off and took the lead in the 20th minute after Peter Weatherson was on hand to convert from 12 yards after good work from James McAlister on the right.

They continued to dominate and could have gone further ahead before the interval, but Weatherson and Allan Jenkins both shot wide of the target from the edge of the area.

And Morton were made to pay for their wastefulness after the interval as Airdrie drew level in the 55th minute when Diarmuid O'Carroll headed home Richard Waddell's cross.

But Morton hit back 10 minutes later as David MacGregor nodded in Steven Masterton's centre to seal the points and boost their own chances of survival.
