Dumbarton could take a huge step away from thoughts of being involved in automatic relegation issues by defeating visitors Morton for a second time this season and opening up a 15 point gap on the Greenock side.

The Sons miss goalkeeper Jamie Ewings with a groin strain and Stephen Grindlay will come in to deputise. Scott Agnew is a doubt with a groin problem, however new loan signing, striker Chris Kane from St Johnstone, is added to their squad.

Aaron Barry has returned to Sheffield United at the end of his loan deal and plans to bring Mark McLaughlin in from their Greenock opponents have come good after Morton cancelled his contract yesterday and he could face his former colleagues.

Manager Ian Murray said: “Cowdenbeath winning at Alloa has put extra pressure on both teams. Morton now have to make up a 9 point gap to them and Cowdenbeath will fancy dragging ourselves and Queen of the South back into things at the bottom in the second half of the season.”

“It would be great to get the win that cancel’s out the three points Cowdenbeath gained on us on Thursday. We have beaten Morton at our place already this season and it would be good to make it two in a row.”

Morton manager Kenny Shiels is hoping to receive international clearance from Tom Tomsk in Russia ahead of kick off to allow him to field short term signing Garry O’Connor. The former Hibs and Scotland striker has been training with the Cappielow club who insist that they have done all they can to get the deal registered.

Shiels has signed defender Jamie McCormack who was previously with Wigan Athletic and former St Johnstone player David Robertson and they will feature against the Sons. Another new recruit Brad Gascoigne from Corby Town will not be involved against the Sons and striker Dougie Imrie is suspended.

David O’Brien remains out due to a shoulder injury and the fit again trio of Jonathan Page, Thomas O’Ware and Tony Wallace will not feature due to a lack of match practice.

Shiels said: “I do not have many options up front for this game so I want to have Garry available. It would be terrific game to win and it would build on the progress I have already seen us make.”

“We have improved in the two games that I have seen and we need to progress again to beat Dumbarton. I will be short of strikers if I do not get Garry in so I will need to find a way of making up for that.”
