Morton v Queen of the South

The Championship meeting between Morton and Queen of the South goes ahead just 4 days after the game was abandoned due to the tragic death of home supporter Andrew Kemp on the Cappielow terracing.

Both managers, Kenny Shiels of the hosts and the Doonhamer’s Jim McIntyre, both know that the game will be played on an emotional evening at the Greenock ground, however they have both welcomed the opportunity to play again quickly.

The Greenock boss, who has been involved in four games where fans have passed away, spent yesterday evening with Mr Kemp’s family to ensure that the club pay tribute in an appropriate manner to the 74 year old.

Shiels said: “It will be an emotional night but it is better to get going again sooner rather than later. We will look to pay our own tribute and respects before playing Queen of the South at football.”

As for the business side of things Shiels added: “The side immediately above us Cowdenbeath had a great result at the weekend when they beat Hamilton Accies. We have to try and match that by defeating Queen of the South.”

Recent signing, former Scotland striker Garry O’Connor is a major doubt after missing training on Monday and yesterday with flu like symptoms. Thomas O’Ware will be in central defence again as new recruit from Celtic, Stuart Findlay, is serving a suspension incurred in under-20 games for the Parkhead club.

Barrie McKay’s loan deal from Rangers has been extended and he will be included however Reece Hands is a major doubt with a pelvic injury. David O’Brien has returned to training with a shoulder injury a lack of recent game time after 4 months out will see him remain on the side-lines.

Queen of the South could break into the top four for the first time in 5 months with a win, however Palmerston manager Jim McIntyre was thinking only of the family affected by Saturday’s tragedy.

McIntyre said: “Both clubs will pay their respects before the game and everyone at Queen of the South are thinking of Mr Kemp’s family at this time. The game was abandoned in terrible circumstances but it is right to get playing again as soon as possible despite the tragic events.”

“This game will take care of itself as our personnel will be the same.”

Derek Young remains out following toe surgery with on-loan Motherwell striker Bob McHugh included after overcoming a thigh injury.
