Two teams desperate for a victory meet at Central Park with hosts Cowdenbeath looking to kick-start their fight to get away from ninth place and visitors Morton out for the win that will keep their thin hopes of avoiding the drop automatically alive.

Jimmy Nicholl’s side have not won in their last four games whereas his former boss at Kilmarnock, Kenny Shiels, has seen his Greenock side lose their last four.

Nicholl said: “It has been a disappointing run and we cannot allow teams to get any further ahead of us. The players have to go about their jobs properly and better than they did at Queen of the South on Saturday where mistakes cost us goals at bad times.”

“We enjoyed a really good February however March has not been so kind. Hopefully we can turn that around by seeing off Morton and then doing the same to Hamilton here on Saturday.  If we can pick up 6 points then we have got ourselves all but clear of one threat and getting close to dragging other teams into another.”

Top goalscorer Kane Hemmings will not be able to help OUT as he remains out with a hamstring injury and Darren Brownlie who missed out on the 2-1 defeat at Palmerston is a doubt with James Fowler playing his last game of his loan spell before returning to Kilmarnock.

Morton went on the attack against title chasing Hamilton at the weekend and it almost paid off however they eventually lost 4-3 and it looks like they will go for goals again tonight.

Manager Kenny Shiels said: “We have to win it is as simple as that. Draws are no use to us. The attacking part of our game was good at the weekend but we need to be better defensively.”

“I wanted us to be heading to Cowdenbeath having put pressure on them with a win however it never happened but we are still as determined to win.”

“Picking up three points gives us fresh hope that we can get off bottom place. We have shown that we can score goals now and if we add a bit of defensive steel to that we have a chance.”

Ben Sampayo and Reece Hands are out injured for the Cappielow side with Darren Cole struggling with a groin problem.
