Hemmings' birthday to remember

Kane Hemmings secured himself an early birthday present by claiming his first Rangers goal in their 4-1 win over Queen's Park.

The striker - who turns 21 on Monday - came off the bench to open his senior account for the club, with David Templeton grabbing a double and Fraser Aird also on the score-sheet.

Having already wrapped up the Irn-Bru Third Division title, Rangers were able to play without pressure and this performance was a big improvement on recent weeks.

The big screens at the national stadium displayed a message of congratulations to Rangers, who were crowned champions last week only after nearest rivals Queen's suffered defeat at the hands of Elgin City after their own match at Montrose had ended all square earlier in the day.

Rangers made two changes following the drab goalless stalemate at Links Park, with Aird and Anestis Argyriou both added to the starting line-up at Hampden.

Chris Hegarty missed out through suspension and youngster Hemmings was dropped to the bench after failing to hit the target as the lone striker in the last two outings.

Lee McCulloch returned to a forward role, after a spell shoring up defence, with Sebastien Faure taking the skipper's place at centre-half.

The first real chance of the match fell to Aird, who tried his luck with a curling effort that dropped straight into the hands of goalkeeper Neil Parry.

Templeton then weaved his way into the box before seeing a shot blocked, with McCulloch's rebound strike also coming off a Spiders defender.

Queen's passed up a great chance to take the lead when Jamie Longworth bulleted a header wide from five yards when he should at least have worked goalkeeper Neil Alexander.

Rangers had failed to find the back of the net from open play in their last three matches but ended the goal drought with an 18th-minute opener.

Lee Wallace burst down the left flank before the ball broke for Templeton on the edge of the area and he drove beyond Parry, despite the keeper getting a hand to the shot.

Hampden was clearly a venue Aird enjoyed and he doubled the lead after 36 minutes with his second goal for Rangers - and his second at the national stadium after claiming the winner against the Spiders earlier in the season.

An Ian Black free-kick found McCulloch at the back post and his effort was prevented from crossing the line by the feet of Parry, before Aird reacted to stab home the loose ball from a yard out.

Argyriou appeared to go over on his ankle at the start of the second half and was forced off just before the hour-mark, as Hemmings was thrown into the action with McCulloch moved back to defence.

Hemmings was celebrating his first Rangers goal with 69 minutes on the clock after meeting Templeton's pass and lashing high into the net with his left foot.

Hungry for more, the forward then screwed an effort across goal and past the upright, with Parry untroubled on this occasion.

Barrie McKay was introduced to the action and quickly teed up Templeton for his second of the day, the winger responding with a decent right-foot effort after 86 minutes.

Queen's Park did have the net bulging with two minutes to go but Lawrence Shankland's back-post header was too little, too late from the home side.

McCoist hoping Rangers flair up

Rangers manager Ally McCoist has backed his players to show what they are made of for remainder of the season now they are no longer under pressure to deliver the title.

The Light Blues were confirmed as Irn-Bru Third Division champions last week, despite being held to a 0-0 draw at Montrose, after nearest rivals Queen's Park suffered defeat to Elgin City.

The stalemate at Links Park followed another drab goalless affair against Stirling Albion the previous week and McCoist is well aware that Rangers stumbled over the line in the end.

But, as they prepare to travel to Hampden on Sunday to face Queen's, he is hoping to witness some of the flair that has been missing in recent matches.

He said: "You could make an argument that they could maybe start producing - and I don't mean to be cheeky.

"Definitely the last two or three performances haven't been of the standard we would want. We certainly haven't been potent in front of goal.

"I'm really hoping, now that we have won the title, a little bit of pressure might have been lifted off some of the younger boys."

With defender Ross Perry back in contention, Lee McCulloch could lead the line after a spell shoring up the defence, with McCoist again bemoaning a lack of forward options in recent outings.

He said: "You can see the team that we played in the last couple of games. When we're looking at youth squads to fill numbers on benches, it's not ideal.

"We don't really have a centre-forward. I could understand the crowd's frustration at the weekend, when they wanted us to go two up-front, but sadly we don't have two centre-forwards to play up-front. It is that simple.

"I'm just hoping at the weekend there is a little bit of pressure lifted off the lads going back to the national stadium.

"It's a place where the club has enjoyed enormous success over the years and hopefully we can just go and enjoy ourselves now and play with more attacking flair and confidence."

Youngster Lewis Macleod continues to make good progress after suffering knee ligament damage in January.

McCoist would love to see the talented midfielder back in action before the end of the season but admits club medics may block the comeback.

He said: "The good news is that Lewis Macleod ran by me on the training park, as most of them do nowadays.

"The fact he was out running was a real bonus.

"He's got a chance but I know how precious our medical staff are and I can totally understand that they might see it as pointless taking a risk with four or five games to go.

"But I would love to see the wee man back because I think he deserves a run out and a round of applause from the fans for his services this year."

Queen's Park defender Jamie Brough, sent off the last time the sides met at the National Stadium, is struggling to make this one with an ankle injury.

Allan Urquhart is out with a knee injury, but Tony Quinn is available after a hip problem and Sean Burns could also make it after an ankle injury.

Head coach Gardner Speirs said: "Our aim is to go out and pose Rangers problems.

"We keep on getting told that we are the only Third Division team not to score against them this season and it would if we could be good put that right.

"We are not assured of a play-off place yet and the sooner we are the happier we will be. Getting something from Rangers would help that."
