SFL Morning Update - Thursday July 9

Arbroath's new striker looks to bring on youngsters, Ayr strengthen with Samson, Sponsors remain at Brechin, Shire sign two forwards, Maitland begins search for new striker and a very special Birthday!

Hislop excited by move to Arbroath

Arbroath forward Steven Hislop was convinced to sign for the club when Gayfield manager John McGlashan asked him to pass on his striking tips to his younger team-mates.

Hislop, who left Second Division Champions Raith Rovers in the summer explained, "I had a few options this summer however when I spoke to John he went into a great deal of detail of what he thought I could bring to his side. He told me he saw part of my role as taking the strikers at the club like Kevin Milne and Bryan Scott for sessions on my own and passing on tips about what I would do in certain situations."

Added Hislop, "It was something I have never been asked to do, and it really got me thinking and helped seal the deal for me to come here."

The striker missed a large chunk of Rovers Championship season, however after making his Arbroath debut in a friendly with Queen of the South, Hislop is predicting a better run of games this term. The former Livingston and Ross County 31 year said, "There is no reason why I can not play a full season indeed the manager has set me a goal target based on playing all season."

Ayr sign goalkeeper

Ayr United have signed former Scotland under-21 squad member goalkeeper Craig Samson on a one year contract. The 25 year old started his career at Ayrshire rivals Kilmarnock and had loan spells at Queen of the South and St Johnstone before playing with both Dundee clubs and Ross County.

The shot-stoppers last club was English side Hereford where his contract was terminated by mutual consent three months ago.

Sponsors sign on again at Brechin

Brechin City have received a double boost with both their main sponsors, Mackie Motors and The Northern Hotel have agreed to keep backing the club for a further season.

Glebe Park Chairman Ken Ferguson said, "We are delighted that such highly regarded local businesses as Mackie Motors and the Northern Hotel have renewed the main sponsorship agreement. We are proud to display the Mackie Motors and Northern Hotel logos on our new kit designs."

Shire sign two strikers

East Stirling have made a double capture of forwards with former Alloa and Morton man Jamie Stevenson turning his loan move with Jim McInally's men into a permanent deal and Airdrie United's former Motherwell forward Stephen McGuire also signing on.

McInally said, "We had to push the boat out a bit to get Jamie but we all know how good a player he is after his spell here last season and Stephen is a really clever player who I think will be a big success this season."

Maitland begins to look elsewhere

Alloa manager Allan Maitland may run out of time in his pursuit of his former Hamilton Accies and Clyde striker Brian Carrigan who has returned to junior side Linlithgow Rose after a spell on loan at Recreation Park last season.

Maitland said, "We made a bid for Brian over a month ago and that was turned down and I have heard nothing since so I have started to look at other targets."

Many Happy Returns to Queen's Park Football Club who celebrate their 142nd Birthday today. Many thanks to their programme and website editor Logan Taylor who passed on this gem of information!
