Premier Sports Cup - Team of the Round

QUEEN OF THE SOUTH STRIKER ALLY ROY IS NAMED STAR MAN FROM ROUND 5 OF THE PREMIER SPORTS CUP GROUP STAGE!

GK – Liam Kelly (Motherwell)
The Steelmen confirmed their place in the Premier Sports Cup last 16 with a 2-0 win over League 2 side Annan Athletic at Fir Park. Kelly was an assured presence between the sticks, and he saved Owen Moxon’s second-half spot kick to keep a clean sheet.

DEF – Joe Shaughnessy (St. Mirren)
A real captain’s performance from the Saints skipper! Shaughnessy helped to keep things tight at the back and popped up with a 95th-minute goal to ensure the Buddies gained a seeded spot in the second-round draw.

DEF – Martin McNiff (Stirling Albion)
It was an afternoon to remember for the Binos, as they put in a top-drawer performance to defeat League 1 side Peterhead 3-1 at Forthbank. McNiff’s defensive qualities shone throughout, with the defender also managing to get his name on the scoresheet!

DEF – Liam Dick (Raith Rovers)
Liam Dick has played every minute of Rovers’ Premier Sports Cup campaign so far. Saturday saw arguably his best performance for his new club, as they confirmed their place in the second round, picking up a shoot-out bonus point following a 0-0 draw with Alloa.

MID – Blair Spittal (Ross County)
A Man of the Match display in every sense. Spittal was involved in everything good that Ross County created at home to Montrose. The Dingwall side’s new No 7 scored twice and set up another two in a 4-1 win for the Staggies!

MID – Jamie Walker (Heart of Midlothian)
The Jambos had been struggling to find a way past Caley Thistle keeper Mark Ridgers at Tynecastle but Jamie Walker came off the bench and fired the home side to a 1-0 victory with a superb low, driven strike from the edge of the box.

MID – Nicky Low (Arbroath)
Low just seems to be getting better and better with every game he plays for the Lichties. The midfielder was superb on Saturday, with Arbroath having to come from two goals behind to beat Kelty Hearts 3-2. Low was heavily involved in the build-up to the second goal, and converted the third from the spot.

MID – Josh Edwards (Dunfermline Athletic)
There were plenty of worthy Team of the Round contenders from the Pars side that beat Stenny 4-1 on Saturday. We’ve gone for Edwards, whose running, skill and endeavour on the left flank made him a constant threat. He also notched an assist for the fourth goal!

FWD – Jason Cummings (Dundee)
Dundee boss James McPake is faced with a serious managerial headache ahead of the Premiership campaign, with the ability to call upon the attacking talents of Jason Cummings, Danny Mullen, Cillian Sheridan and Alex Jakubiak. Cummings did his prospects of starting the season opener no harm, scoring twice in a 5-2 win over Forfar Athletic.

FWD – Ally Roy (Queen of the South)
It’s been a dream start to life in Dumfries for Ally Roy, who ends the group stage as Premier Sports Cup top scorer with six goals. Roy was at his very best in Saturday’s 4-1 win over former employers, Airdrieonians. He scored a perfect hat-trick, and for that reason, he is the Matchday 5 Star Man!

FWD – Robbie Muirhead (Greenock Morton)
It was a true striker’s display from Muirhead, who scored twice as Morton came back from a goal behind to beat Clyde 2-1 at Cappielow. With five goals in his last five competitive appearances, could Muirhead be a shout for Championship top scorer in 2021/22?
