Airdrie United pay respect to 1992 Airdrieonians

Sparta strip for the Diamonds this season

Airdrie United have unveiled their first team strip for the new season and the outfits worn by manager Jimmy Boyle’s team will pay a massive compliment to the Aidrieonians’ team of 20 years ago that made it onto the European stage.

Club Secretary Ann Marie Ballantyne said, “May 1st this year marked the tenth anniversary of Airdrieonians' demise, however only a decade before that the team were playing in the European Cup Winners Cup. Our 2012/13 home kit pays homage to the Diamonds ‘Class of 92’”.

“That team reached the Scottish Cup Final against Rangers and despite losing they qualified for the European Cup Winners Cup, where they lost narrowly to Sparta Prague.”

Ballantyne added, “The kit they wore had our famous red diamond but on a white jersey with a grey pattern on it and our new home strip celebrates the era and we are hoping it inspires our current squad to emulate some of the success of the 92 team.”

The Lanarkshire club are also hosting a number of events including a Gala Dinner to mark their 20th Anniversary of their trip to Prague.
