The manager who gave Scott Booth his debut at Aberdeen almost a quarter of a century ago is convinced he will make a success of being the manager of Stenhousemuir.
Booth took over from interim boss Brown Ferguson at Ochilview yesterday after leaving his post as a Youth Coach at the Scottish FA and Falkirk Technical Director, Alex Smith, reckons that the 42-year-old will do well.
He said: “I went to Aberdeen in the summer of 1988 and Scott had just joined straight from school. He was very quickly saying that he wanted to be in the youth team.
“He always had a confidence about him. He broke through at the same time as Eoin Jess who was a much quieter character. Eoin would tend to let his football do the talking but Scott was much more in your face.”
His desire to learn more about the game saw Booth leave Pittodrie in 1997 to join Borussia Dortmund and he also had spells in Holland with FC Utrecht, Vitesse Arnhem and FC Twente before returning to Aberdeen for one season in 2003.
Smith said: “His experiences in Europe will have broadened his mind and Scott has shown he is a good coach by winning the Sky Sports Victory Shield with the Scotland U16 side this season.
“He is now taking a chance by moving into a first-team senior environment. I am sure that desire to keep pushing things will not have left him and he will lead Stenhousemuir well.”
