Baird looking forward to cup competition

Queen of the South striker recalls Ramsdens Cup winner

Queen of the South striker John Baird only played once in Cup football for Raith Rovers last season however his exploits in that one game means that he is recognised wherever he goes now.

The 28 year old scored the winner is last season’s Final against Rangers at a packed Easter Road and he is still being congratulated on the strike.

Baird had not long arrived at Stark’s Park after a spell at Partick Thistle and he scored the only goal of the game and he said: “It was a huge game and it was great to score in it. It has been strange since then because people have been coming up to say well done and I have even had kids coming to my door asking to get their football tops and other things signed.”

“My mum and dad were there and it was a huge day for us at Easter Road It is something to look back on in my career and say it was a great time but I don’t want it to be a one-off.”

“I remember when the ball came out to me that I was thinking just hit the target. For some reason I opened up my foot more than I intended doing but the ball went in. I have watched it a thousand times so I know exactly what I did.”

The Doonhamers meet Livingston tomorrow and Baird is out to held Jim McIntyre’s men progress after moving to Dumfries in the summer.

Baird said: “I am not going to sit on my laurels it is about going out there and doing well again. I had not played in the Challenge Cup for a couple of seasons before the Final so I want to build on what I did in Edinburgh.”

“I have settled in really well at Queen of the South and feel part of the team already. Livingston will be tough and I know their manager John McGlynn well however it would be great to get off to a win.”
