SPFL Chief Executive Neil Doncaster said: "Everyone at the SPFL was deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Chris Mitchell.
"Our thoughts are with his family, friends and all former team-mates, fellow players, staff and supporters of the clubs Chris played with."
