County Cup hero enjoys freedom

Vigurs looking for side to build on ALBA Challenge Cup win

Ross Countys Iain Vigurs celebrates with the Alba Challenge CupOne of Ross County’s goal heroes from Sunday’s ALBA Challenge Cup win, Iain Vigurs, is hoping that his team play their 5 remaining league games with the same freedom from pressure that they showed in their 2-0 win over Queen of the South.

Vigurs completed a fine move that involved a cross from Michael Gardyne and dummy from Andrew Barrowman to make it 2-0 at McDiarmid Park and he said, “It was brilliant to get a goal and it came at a really good time for us just a few minutes before half time. It probably killed them off a wee bit. I shouted at Andy to leave the ball after Michael had done so well on the wing. That is the type of football we are good at and hopefully we can keep doing that in the League.”

Vigurs now wants that free flowing football to be used to ease the Dingwall men away from the relegation play-offs as he said, “If we play out the season the way we played on Sunday we will move up the table. We need to treat every game like it is a Cup Final and use the freedom of not worrying about our league place as an inspiration. There is pressure associated with going for 3 points but if we can put that to the back of our minds and play with a bit of expression we will do well.”

“In the Final neither Queen of the South or ourselves were worrying about points so we need to do that for five games in a row now.”

Perhaps we went into games expecting to win them and waiting for things to happen.”

“We have quality throughout our side and if we play at a high tempo we can beat anyone in this league. Whatever the reason the season has simply not worked out the way we thought it would.”

The 22 year old praised manager Jimmy Calderwood for the way he has gone about restoring County to their free flowing best saying, “The Manager has bred confidence amongst the lads. He knows we are good players and tells us we are good players. He wants us to attack with freedom and that suits us and hopefully we can show that before the League campaign is out.”
