Queen of the South hot-shot Stephen Dobbie has scooped the IRN-BRU Cup Golden Balls award after playing a starring role in the third round.
The striker scored a ballsy brace in the Doonhamers’ rampant 7-1 win against Stenhousemuir, capping a fizzing performance from the club’s No 11 to set up a fourth-round tie with Linfield at Palmerston on Sunday October 9, live on BBC ALBA at 1.00pm.
As the football sponsor with balls, IRN-BRU created the Golden Balls award to recognise impressive performances during each round of the revamped Scottish Challenge Cup.
Queen of the South’s cup hero beat off stiff competition from Livingston’s Liam Buchanan, Forfar Athletic’s Josh Peters and Dunfermline Athletic’s Lee Ashcroft, securing 42% of the votes in a poll held on IRN-BRU’s official Twitter channel (@IrnBruFootball) to bag the award.
Stephen said: “Thanks to everyone who voted for me to win this award and a big thanks to my team-mates, who were outstanding in the 7-1 victory in the last round. It’s always nice to win a solo award but it was a great team effort. Hopefully we can win the game against Linfield and progress into the next round because we definitely want to get as far as we can.”
Adrian Troy, Head of Marketing at IRN-BRU, said: “The third round was one of the most exciting so far. There were goals galore and lots of fantastic performances but Stephen is certainly a worthy Golden Balls award winner after scoring two goals.”
