Docherty departs with heavy heart

Stranraer’s Player of the Year Mark Docherty admits it was a difficult decision to leave Stair Park for Alloa.

Stranraer’s Player of the Year Mark Docherty admits it was a difficult decision to leave Stair Park for Alloa.

The 26-year-old ex-St Mirren, Stirling Albion, Brechin City and Annan player has joined the Wasps as he wants to play in the Championship next season after former Recreation Park boss Paul Hartley denied him the chance a year ago.

He said: “I had been with Alloa through the Third Division and the Second Division and was expecting to play in the Championship but the manager felt differently. You could say I am going back with something to prove.

“Stranraer were terrific for me and leaving them was difficult. They have a great manager and a great bunch of lads and if we had won promotion via the play-offs I would have probably stayed.

“I wish them every success but I want to play at the highest level I can and that is why I am going to Alloa. I know the manager Barry Smith as we were at Brechin together and his assistant Paddy Connolly was there when I was as well, so I am sure I will settle back in quickly.”
