Returning midfielder Gary Harkins opened the scoring, netting the rebound after his penalty was saved, and German trialist Luka Tankulic added the second before half-time.
City boss Manuel Pellegrini made nine changes at the interval, with Samir Nasri and Alvaro Negredo among those introduced, but Paul Hartley's team held firm to record an impressive win.
