Eaglesham succeeds where Denholm failed

Queen's Park hat-trick debutant is unlikely to suffer same fate as predecessor

Graeme Eaglesham scores for Queen's ParkThere seems little chance of Queen’s Park striker Graeme Eaglesham going the same way as the last Hampden player who scored a hat-trick on his debut and promptly getting dropped for the next game.

Eaglesham took the match ball home after scoring three times on his first outing against Livingston in a 3-2 win in the ALBA Challenge Cup and he is odds on to be in the Spiders line up when they face Inverness Caledonian Thistle tomorrow, however Ian Denholm was dropped nearly 40 years ago after a similar feat.

Denholm actually netted four times on his first outing at Brechin City in the opening league game of season 1970-1971 in a game won 7-0 by the Spiders, however when Alloa came calling the next weekend Denholm was not listed to start the game.

Hampden Committee man Garry Templeman said, “I can remember Ian scoring but Tommy Duncan who picked the team then decided he was not fully happy with his overall performance.”

Gardner SpeirsPredecessor Denholm did have the last laugh as he came on as a substitute against Alloa and scored in a 3-0 win.

Eaglesham seems certain to start against Inverness Caledonian Thistle in the Co-operative Insurance Cup this Saturday with head coach Gardner Speirs saying, “It is fair to say that after scoring his hat-trick last way Graeme is more or less assured of his place”

Speirs added, “I would be quite happy if history repeats itself with a 3-0 win mind.”
