Chelsea have received a request from East Stirlingshire to play a pre-season friendly at Stamford Bridge - with Shire reminding the 2012 Champions League winners that the game has been outstanding for more than 50 years!
The League 2 club reckon they are due a meeting with Jose Mourinho’s millionaires due to one of the conditions attached to the transfer of Eddie McCreadie in 1962.
McCreadie went south for a fee of £5,000 plus home and away games between the clubs and Shire are now asking Chelsea to keep up their end of the bargain and play a game in London.
Tommy Docherty brought his side north to Firs Park in October 1963 for a match that ended 2-2 but the return meeting never happened.
The game was long forgotten about until Shire Chairman Tony Ford recently came across the documentation for McCreadie’s transfer and he has now contacted Chelsea.
He said: “As far as we can tell, it is still a legally-binding agreement that sets out the terms of the transfer, which includes a cash payment as well as home and away games between the clubs.
“Shire supporters of a certain age remember Chelsea coming to our old home of Firs Park but we are certain that the second game never took place.
“I am a great believer that if you do not ask, you do not get so I sent Chelsea a letter pointing out that we are due a game at Stamford Bridge. They have got back in touch and said they will look into it.
“I am not sure if a game against us was in Mr Mourinho’s pre-season plans but you never know!”
