Ellis looking for top ten entry

Raith defender closes in on appearance record

Raith Rovers’ player/ coach Laurie Ellis will be hoping to have an injury free time of things next season as he stands on the threshold of moving into the top ten of record appearance holders with the Stark’s Park club.

Laurie Ellis in action for Raith RoversEllis, who has played for Rovers in three separate spells, sits in twelfth place at the moment with 363 appearances and 10 more would see him go ninth at the expense of Johnny Maule who played from 1938 to 1954 and Willie Polland who made 372 appearances during two spells at the club.

Striker and former manager Gordon Dalziel would then be in 33-year-old Ellis’ sights with his total of 378 games, although with only 15 goals just now he is unlikely to come close to Dalziel’s total of 202 counters.

Charlie Moodie is next in line with 420 games with the all-time record holder being Willie McNaught who donned Kirkcaldy colours 658 times in a 21 year spell that began in 1941.

Raith boss Grant Murray said: “Laurie enjoyed a well-earned Testimonial and also played in over 30 games last season. He is very well respected at our club and hopefully he will get into that top ten this season.”
