William Hill Premiership

Fantasy SPFL: Beginners Guide

Everything you need to know about the game

Whether you're completely new to fantasy football or you've been playing for years, getting started with the official William Hill Premiership Fantasy game couldn't be easier.

This guide covers the key rules, explains how the game works and highlights a few important tips before you build your first squad.

Register and build your squad

You can play William Hill Premiership Fantasy through the official mobile app on Apple and Android devices or via the official website.

Once you've registered, you'll automatically be entered into the Overall League, where you'll compete against fantasy managers from across the country.

Of course, one of the best parts of fantasy football is competing against your friends. You can create your own private mini-league or join an existing one using an invitation or password.

Building your team

Every manager starts with a £100 million budget to build a 15-player squad.

You'll need to balance premium players with value options while staying within the budget and remembering you can only select three players from any one Premiership club.

One feature that makes this game particularly interesting is the flexibility when building your squad. You're free to choose between:

  • 1-2 goalkeepers
  • 3-6 defenders
  • 3-6 midfielders
  • 1-5 forwards

Before each Gameweek you'll select your preferred formation and Starting XI.

Your bench matters

Unlike many fantasy football games, your substitutes still score points every Gameweek.

Bench players score half points, while your Starting XI score full points.

There are also no automatic substitutions, meaning if one of your starting players doesn't feature, nobody comes off the bench to replace them. That makes choosing a starting XI you are confident will play and building a strong 15-player squad very important.

Each Gameweek you'll also nominate:

  • a Captain - scores double points plus a 20-point bonus.
  • a Supersub - scores triple points if they come off the bench during the real match.

Remember that your captain and Supersub must be selected every Gameweek, even though the rest of your team rolls over automatically.

Deadlines and transfers

Every Gameweek has a single deadline - the kick-off time of the first fixture. Once that deadline passes, your team is locked until the following Gameweek.

Managers receive three free transfers after each Gameweek, provided a captain was selected for the previous one. Unused transfers roll over, allowing you to build up transfers over time if you're happy with your squad.

Unlike some fantasy games, you cannot exceed your available transfers by taking a points deduction, making transfer planning an important part of the game.

Another feature to keep an eye on is player prices.

Player values rise and fall throughout the season, and if one of your players increases in value, you'll receive the full selling price if you decide to transfer them out. Spotting in-form players early can gradually increase your available budget as the season progresses.

How scoring works

Most fantasy managers will already recognise the core scoring categories.

Players earn points for:

  • Goals
  • Assists
  • Clean sheets
  • Saves
  • Minutes played
  • Shots on target
  • Tackles

Players can also lose points for:

  • Goals conceded (goalkeepers and defenders)
  • Own goals
  • Yellow cards
  • Red cards

One important difference is that shots on target and tackles also earn fantasy points, rewarding players who consistently contribute throughout a match.

A few important differences

William Hill Premiership Fantasy has been designed to keep things straightforward.

There are no chips such as Wildcards or Free Hits, with flexibility instead coming from the generous transfer system.

The game also doesn't use traditional Blank or Double Gameweeks. Rearranged fixtures are handled differently, with postponed fixtures scoring once eventually played and brought-forward fixtures awarding two points to all players involved when the original Gameweek arrives.

The full rules contain worked examples explaining exactly how these situations are handled.

Three quick tips before Gameweek 1

If you're building your first squad, here are three simple pieces of advice:

1. Build a strong 15-player squad.
Your bench scores points every week, so don't spend your entire budget on just your Starting XI.

2. Never forget your captain.
Selecting a captain unlocks your double points, 20-point bonus and your three free transfers for the following Gameweek.

3. Wait before making transfers.
Where possible, wait until close to the Gameweek deadline so you can benefit from team news and confirmed line-ups before locking in your squad.
