On this day in 1997 St Johnstone celebrated promotion to the top flight with a 3-2 victory over East Fife in front of 6,454 fans at McDiarmid Park.

Paul Sturrock's side were runaway winners of the First Division title, finishing 20 points clear of Airdrieonians, who lost to Hibernian in the play-offs.

Mainstays of the title-winning side included Alan Main, Jim Weir and Roddy Grant, who was top league scorer for Saints with 19 goals. A memorable campaign for the Perth club also saw them thrash Tayside rivals Dundee 7-2 at McDiarmid Park on New Year's Day.
