Montrose have named Paul Hegarty as their new manager following the departure of George Shields in the wake of Saturday's 3-0 defeat to East Fife.

The former Scotland and Dundee United defender will be assisted by ex-Tannadice team-mate John Holt on a deal until the end of the season.

Hegarty, who has previously managed Forfar, Aberdeen, Dundee United and Livingston, takes over with Montrose second from bottom in League 2 and his first game at the helm is away to Elgin on Saturday.

Chairman Derek Sim said: “Paul has a great stature in the game, brings a high level of management and coaching experience, a great knowledge of the game plus an enthusiasm which can only assist in the coming weeks of ensuring the club climbs the league.

“John Holt had a very distinguished football career and returns to Montrose having had a brief spell as manager in seasons 1993/94 and 1994/95 which ultimately led to promotion. We welcome both to Links Park.”
