Highland anniversary

It is 20 years ago today since Inverness Caledonian Thistle and Ross County played their first league matches as members of what was the Scottish Football League.

The Highland pair joined the SFL in the summer of 1994 when the senior set-up was expanded from 40 clubs to 42 and the four-division structure was introduced.

Caledonian Thistle, as they were called initially following the merger of Inverness Caley and Inverness Thistle, kicked off their Third Division campaign with a 5-2 victory against Arbroath at Telford Street, helped by an Alan Hercher hat-trick.

Meanwhile, Ross County started with a 2-0 win against Cowdenbeath at Central Park thanks to goals from Billy Herd and Jamie MacPherson.

County enjoyed the better first season, finishing third behind Forfar and Montrose, with Caley Thistle in sixth place.

The rise of both clubs has been one of the big stories in Scottish football over the past two decades, with the pair establishing themselves in the top flight and reaching major finals.

Exactly 20 years on from those opening SFL fixtures, Inverness Caley Thistle entertain Dundee in the Premiership this evening and Ross County make the journey to Firhill to play Partick Thistle.
