McIntyre reshapes QOS squad

Queen of the South manager Jim McIntyre has wasted no time in shaping his squad for next season following Saturday’s play-off defeat from Falkirk.

Queen of the South manager Jim McIntyre has wasted no time in shaping his squad for next season following Saturday’s play-off defeat from Falkirk.

Five players have agreed new deals - skipper Chris Higgins, Andy Dowie, Chris Mitchell, Gavin Reilly and Derek Lyle.

Danny Carmichael, Mark Kerr and Michael Paton have all been offered new terms but agreement has still to be reached with the trio.

Experienced former Aberdeen midfielder Derek Young is leaving, as is goalkeeper Calum Antell, with youngsters Scott Hooper, Aidan Smith and Dean Smith all being offered one-year apprentice contracts.

McIntyre said: “It is always difficult to say goodbye to players as we have done with Derek and Calum. Derek has been great for us and he played through a serious toe injury when we were short of players earlier this season.

“He has continued to live in Aberdeen and train with us part-time and his experience about the squad has been great.

“Calum never established himself as our first-choice goalkeeper but I am sure he will be able to do that elsewhere."

On-loan St Johnstone shot-stopper Zander Clark, who played the majority of the season between the sticks for the Dumfries side, is expected to return on a similar basis in 2014/15.
