New Montrose boss George Shields has thanked the players for helping him step up from assistant manager.
Shields was appointed earlier this week to replace Stuart Garden and reckons the display in Saturday’s 2-1 win over Annan helped his case.
He said: “The players were terrific against Annan and, despite not having anything to play for, they fought for everything. I am sure the way they went about things impressed the Board. It certainly impressed me and I have to thank the players for it.
“During my three weeks in (caretaker) charge I have also had a full turn-out at every training session. The players have backed me and I am really pleased with that.”
Shields, who has brought in former Scotland defender Lee Wilkie as his assistant, said: “Lee and I go back a long way – all the way back to his youth days at Dundee. I am delighted to bring him back to the club as he and I share similar ideas on the game.”
