As we reach the closing stages of the FIFA World Cup, a new Scottish football season begins with the 2026/27 Premier Sports Cup group stage kick-off this weekend.
There are 16 ties taking place on Saturday - here are five things to look out for on opening weekend.
New Season, New Managers
There’s been no shortage of managerial switches over the summer with several new bosses sampling competitive action for the first time.
Gary Naysmith’s first test as Ayr United boss comes as the Honest Men head down the west coast to Stranraer while his Stenhousemuir successor, Marvin Bartley faces Forfar Athletic at Ochilview.
John Rankin is back in management with Airdrieonians as the Diamonds take on Premiership opposition in Dundee. Palmerston favourite Nicky Clark is looking to make a winning start with Queen of the South as they welcome Kelty Hearts to Dumfries while Elgin City under Stefan Laird face a tricky trip to Kirkcaldy to meet Dougie Imrie’s Raith Rovers.

Another upset on the cards?
What a difference 12 months makes for Steven Pressley and Dundee. The Dee face a re-run of last season’s curtain raiser against Airdrieonians, with the Diamonds securing a 1-0 upset last time out.
After showing positive signs in Pressley’s debut season in charge, can the hosts get off to a perfect start or can the Lanarkshire side replicate their 2025 heroics?
A first-time touchline battle
East Kilbride caught the eye in their first season as an SPFL club last term, going on to win the William Hill League 2 title at the first time of asking. The Oystercatchers gained plaudits from fans and peers alike for their eye-catching attacking play, with manager Mick Kennedy going on to scoop up the division’s Manager of the Season award.
The William Hill League 1 new boys face a stern test on the opening weekend, as they face off against Scottish Cup finalists Dunfermline Athletic at the Bumblebee Stadium. Led by Neil Lennon, the Pars defied the odds last term, defeating three William Hill Premiership sides (including fierce rivals, Falkirk) en route to a Hampden final, before falling to winners Celtic.
Saturday’s meeting pits two of the country’s most passionate bosses against each other so expect a cracker.
Returning heroes
Caley Thistle fans will be delighted to see Aberdeen duo Alfie Bavidge and Alfie Stewart return for 2026/27 after playing crucial roles in the Highlanders’ League 1 success.
Will they pick up where they left off when Inverness host East Fife?
Saturday sees an emotional return for Craig Sibbald at boyhood club Falkirk. The midfielder made over 270 appearances in his first spell, progressing from academy prospect to talismanic figure before leaving in 2018. The first match of his second spell could come against Michael McIndoe’s Edinburgh City, who retained their SPFL status via the play-offs.
