Queen's Park promoted

Airdrieonians defeated in play-off final

Queen's Park beat Airdrieonians 2-1 after extra time in the second leg of the cinch Championship play-off final on Sunday afternoon to secure a 3-2 aggregate victory.

A superb free-kick from Rhys McCabe gave Airdrie an early lead at the Excelsior Stadium but Connor Smith equalised for the Spiders four minutes later.

Simon Murray grabbed the winner from the penalty spot in the second period of extra time to seal a second successive promotion for the Glasgow club.

Neil Doncaster, SPFL chief executive, said: “We would all like to send our warmest congratulations to everyone connected with Queen’s Park on winning the cinch Championship play-off final.

“It is a hugely impressive achievement to win two consecutive promotions, and we look forward to welcoming them to the cinch Championship for the first time since season 1982/83.

“We would also like to send our commiserations to everyone at Airdrieonians, who helped made this year’s cinch Championship play-offs such a compelling advert for the Scottish game.”
