Youngsters end campaign with goalless draw with switzerland

Switzerland  0              Scotland    0

Scotland Under 17 squadScotland’s under-17 side ended their successful participation in their Qualification Group in Luxembourg with a goalless draw against Switzerlandin Junglinster. Both sides had already qualified after wins over the host nation along with Macedonia and Coach Ross Mathie made several changes to his starting line-up as a result.

The Scots settled well and they had an opportunity to take the lead in 17 minutes when Kilmarnock’s Matthew Kennedy was flattened in the box by Levent Gulen, however the spot kick from St Mirren’s Thomas Kennedy was missed.

Goalgrabber Islam Feruz was introduced at half time, however neither side created much in the way of danger in the second period until right at the death when Scotland’s hero against Macedonia, Joe Chalmers, went close.

Switzerland ending up as Group winners courtesy of scoring one more goal than the Scots with Mathie saying, “It has been a successful campaign where we have progressed at this level for the second time in three years. The boys scored goals in the last minute of the last two games to win them and they almost did it again today so I am pleased with their efforts over the week. It would have been nice to top the group, however the objective was to qualify and we did that with a game to spare.”
