The 23-year-old former Heart of Midlothian player, capped by Scotland at U21 level, has agreed a two-year deal at Tannadice.
Smith, who had a loan spell at St Mirren in 2017/18, has been a key player for the Honest Men this season, helping Ian McCall's side to third place in the Ladbrokes Championship.
