Speirs extends time at Hampden

New deal for Queen's Park head coach

Queen’s Park confirmed yesterday that Head Coach Gardner Speirs has been offered and accepted an extended contract at the Third Division club. Speirs, who is shortly to celebrate his fourth anniversary in charge of the Spiders, has agreed a new deal that will see him in charge until the summer of 2014.

Queen's Park Head Coach, Gardner SpiersThe 48-year-old former Clyde and Ross County manager moved from the assistant manager’s position at Partick Thistle to take over from Billy Stark at Hampden, when he left to take on the Scotland under-21 job.

Speirs kept his side in the Second Division in his first season, however a plethora of talent left the Amateurs that summer and Speirs’ rebuilt squad gave Celtic a fright in the Scottish Cup in January 2009 before losing 2-1 before suffering relegation via the play-offs.

Since that time Speirs has led his side into the promotion play-offs for the past two seasons and Queen’s are sitting in third place just now, 8 points behind leaders Alloa.

Queen’s Park Club President Alan Hutchison said, “We are delighted that Gardner has agreed to extend his contract for the next two years. He has proven to be an excellent coach and has the first team playing in a manner that appeals to supporters of this great club as well as being a key supporter of the Youth Development that we invest heavily in.”

“We are glad things are done and dusted now, rather than leaving matters until the end of the season.”

Speirs said, “It was an easy choice to make when we started talking as this club is full of good people. I have enjoyed my four years here and I would like to thank the players for their efforts on the pitch and the supporters and the committee off it.”

“Hopefully we can repeat the success of a top four finish again this season and have a bit of better luck in the Play-Offs.”
