SPFL Spotlight: Liam Buchanan

Alloa top scorer Liam Buchanan took his tally for the season to 14 with a double in a 2-2 draw against Livingston at the weekend.

Alloa top scorer Liam Buchanan took his tally for the season to 14 with a double in a 2-2 draw against Livingston at the weekend.

The summer signing from East Fife has netted four times in the last three games and will be hoping to continue his scoring streak when Paddy Connolly’s men face Livi in the Petrofac Training Cup Final at McDiarmid Park on Sunday.

The ex-Partick Thistle and Dunfermline forward goes under the SPFL Spotlight ahead of the big game, which is live on BBC ALBA with a 4.05pm kick-off.

What is the best goal you have ever scored?
I have scored a few goals but I have not scored too many good ones and I have not scored many from outside of the box. The best one would have been for East Fife at East End Park against Dunfermline last season. I curled it over Ryan Scully from the edge of the box to give us a 2-1 lead, so I will choose that one ahead of my ones in the six-yard box!

What is the best game you have played in?
The day Dunfermline won the First Division down at Morton in 2011. I was just coming back from injury so I did not start the game but I got on for the last 10 minutes and it was a great day for everyone at the club. It only just edges the game from the week before when we beat Raith Rovers 2-1 and Martin Hardie hit home a great free kick to win it. The two of us were neck and neck in the race for the title and winning was pivotal in our success.

What is your favourite ground?
Tynecastle, as it has a fantastic atmosphere.

What is your favourite other sport?
Badminton – not into golf like a lot of footballers are.

Which player in the world would you bring to Alloa?
Keith Wright - I grew up watching him score goals for Hibs and I would love to have played alongside him.

What is your favourite pre-match meal?
Poached eggs with avocado on toast – been that way for a few years.

What is your favourite music?
I am not that big into music but I like Stereophonics and the Kings of Leon. Michael Doyle does the tunes for Alloa but has been dropped a couple of times because of his selections! He could be replaced by Phil Roberts for the final as his taste is not too bad but if Phil does not want to do it we will bring ‘Doyley’ back as a last resort.

Who is the biggest moaner you have played with?

Mark Roberts, who was a player and my boss at Ayr United – I have to get him a mention somewhere!

Who has been your most skilful team-mate?
Joe Cardle at Dunfermline was a talent. He was always really quick with his feet so I will go for him.

Who has been your worst-dressed team-mate?
Greig Spence at Alloa - and the black eye he is sporting just now makes him worse. Spencey always looks like he is wearing Colin Montgomerie’s trainers!

Who is the best trainer you have played with?

There were two of them - Simon Donnelly who, of course, played for Scotland or Mark Quigley from Sligo Rovers. Quigley was a fantastic trainer and a good player for Sligo who was the PFAI Player of the Year for 2012 in the League of Ireland.

And the best dancer!?
Kevin McKinlay, who is at Stirling Albion now but I played with at Partick Thistle. He was always doing the old fishing rod and reeling them in!
