SPFL Weekend in Numbers

Our resident statto brings you the best facts and stories

1 – Heart of Midlothian defeated Falkirk 3-0 at Tynecastle to move two points clear at the top of the William Hill Premiership. Goals from Alexandros Kyziridis, Lawrence Shankland and Craig Halkett moved the Jam Tarts on to 16 points from their opening six matches, their best start to a top-flight season since 2018/19. Shankland’s goal was his 163rd in the SPFL era, making him the outright top scorer across all four divisions since the merger in 2013. Hearts are now unbeaten in their last 11 top-flight matches against Falkirk at Tynecastle – Jim Jefferies was in charge of the Bairns for their last victory, back in April 1995. Falkirk did however win there in the Championship back in January 2015.

8 – Kilmarnock picked up their first win of the William Hill Premiership season with a 2-0 victory over Dundee United at the CalForth Construction Arena at Tannadice. Goals from Bruce Anderson and Robbie Deas extended Killie’s unbeaten away record under Stuart Kettlewell to five matches in all competitions. Deas and Anderson were both also on the scoresheet for Killie last weekend – neither player had scored this season prior to that match. The Ayrshire side have now gone eight matches without defeat against United in all competitions, winning six and drawing two since their last defeat back in November 2022.

89 – St Johnstone defeated Queen’s Park 2-1 at the City Stadium to stay eight points clear at the top of the William Hill Championship. Kai Fotheringham’s first-half goal was cancelled out, but Josh McPake’s 89th-minute winner was enough to make it seven wins and a draw in eight league matches for Simo Valakari’s side. This equals Saints’ best ever start to a league season – they made a similar start in 1989/90 on their way to winning the second tier title. McPake has scored seven goals in eight league matches this season, and each of the last four have come inside the final 10 minutes of games, including two winners and an equaliser.

8 – Inverness Caledonian Thistle climbed to the top of William Hill League 1 thanks to a 4-1 victory over East Fife at the Sarens PSG Stadium. Two goals from David Wotherspoon and one apiece from Alfie Stewart and Alfie Bavidge ensured that Scott Kellacher’s side moved two points clear at the top of the table despite starting with a five-point deduction. With seven wins and one defeat from their opening eight games, this is the Caley Jags’ best ever start to a league season. Inverness have now recorded eight consecutive victories in all competitions – this is their best run since Terry Butcher led them to 10 in a row from March to July 2010.

1 – Stranraer defeated Dumbarton 2-1 at the Marbill Coaches Stadium to pick up their first win of the William Hill League 2 season. Mark Russell’s first half goal was cancelled out, only for James Dolan to score a stoppage time winner which moved the Blues eight points clear of Edinburgh City at the foot of the table. This is Stranraer’s first win in nine visits to Dumbarton – current Sons boss Stevie Farrell was in charge of the Blues for their last victory there, a 1-0 success in December 2018.
