The Scottish Premier League is deeply shocked and saddened to hear of the news of the untimely death of Stewart Thomson, at the age of just 48, following a long battle with illness.

SPL Chief Executive Neil Doncaster said: “Stewart was a thoroughly well-liked and respected figure throughout the game, north and south of the border. His death is a tragic loss to football. The thoughts of everyone at the SPL are with Stewart’s family and friends at this very sad time.”

Former SPL Chairman Lex Gold, who recruited Stewart to the SPL, commented: “Stewart was a fine, decent and compassionate man and the world is a much poorer place with his passing.”

Stewart joined the Scottish Premier League as its Commercial Director in 2000, before joining Rangers FC in 2004 and then moving on to the Football League in England in 2005.
