Nicola Davenport tells us all about her love for the Southside's finest in today's article!
How would you assess your club's 22/23 season so far?
Much better than anticipated. League One to the Championship was a massive jump and we achieved promotion unexpectedly and against the odds when you consider how many points behind Airdrie we finished last season. It’s been an exciting start to the season and some of the football we have played has been brilliant to watch. Here’s hoping for more of the same in the second half of the season.
Main Man: Favourite current player and why
It’s so hard to pick just one but if I had to it would be Simon Murray. He leads the line so well and contributes so much to the team, even when not on the scoresheet. His work rate is terrific and he has the ability to change games. He’s taken on the captaincy and has led by example, which is great to see when we have such a young squad. He’s also brilliant with the supporters and is part of the reason there’s a real togetherness between the squad and the fans.
What is your earliest memory supporting your club?
I don’t have a particular memory that stands out as my earliest. My dad has supported the club all his life and so I was being taken to games from a very, very young age. As I grew older, I found myself going more and more through choice and I have been going week in week out for years now, and I wouldn’t change that for the world.
Explain the nickname
I have no idea! (Time for a Google search) Because of the black and white hooped jersey.
Almost Famous – What is your club best known for?
There’s so much I could write here. The club’s history speaks for itself. I suppose one that stands out is the fact that outside of Celtic and Rangers, we have won the Scottish Cup the most times - even if it hasn’t been for a few years.
Greatest Gaffer: Your favourite/most loved boss watching your team
Billy Stark. No explanation needed. What a guy! (Sorry Owen).
Can you tell us one interesting fact about your club which other fans may not know?
The first Scotland international team was made up entirely of Queen’s Park players when Scotland played England at the West of Scotland Cricket Ground on 30th November 1872. This is the one and only time this has ever happened.
Who would make your ultimate all-time 5-a-side team?
This is from my time watching the club.
- Wullie Muir
- Andy Robertson
- Tony Quinn
- David Anderson
- Jamie Longworth
What is your all-time favourite match?
Our play-off final win against Airdrie earlier this year does it for me. I never imagined seeing us achieve back-to-back promotions and it was done against the odds, with a late goal. I could go on. The scenes after the final whistle with the players and fans as well as the celebrations that night will live long in the memory.
What should visiting fans make sure they see/do when visiting your club/town?
Although we are not there yet, I’m basing this on us being back in the southside. If you’re coming to a game, then there’s no shortage of things to do pre-match. We are in ‘Football’s Square Mile’. Visit the sites of the previous Hampden Parks, most definitely visit Cathkin Park. You won’t be disappointed.
What makes your club special to YOU?
Everything. I honestly believe Queen’s Park are unique and I love it.
