Tartan Ball & Boot awards launched

The Scottish Professional Football League has today launched new top goalscorer awards...

The players who net the most goals in the Ladbrokes Premiership, Championship, League 1 and League 2 will receive the Tartan Ball award for their league at the end of the season.

An overall winner with the most goals across the whole SPFL will also receive the 2018/19 Tartan Boot Award when the league season concludes in May.

The awards will be produced by SPFL Official Match Ball supplier, Mitre, and comes on the back of the SPFL and Mitre announcing a four-year extension to their long-running partnership – an agreement which will see their relationship extend to more than 20 years.

The race is already on to be crowned the inaugural Tartan Ball winners.

Rangers striker Alfredo Morelos leads the way in the Premiership, which returns tomorrow night following the winter break.  He has 12 goals, with Celtic’s Odsonne Edouard and Aberdeen frontman Sam Cosgrove closely behind on nine goals.

In the Championship, Lawrence Shankland of Ayr United and Queen of the South forward Stephen Dobbie are neck and neck with 18 goals each at the top of the goal charts.

Raith Rovers star Kevin Nisbet is the top scorer in League 1 with 18 goals while Edinburgh City striker Blair Henderson has bagged an impressive 21 goals and is out in front in League 2.

Neil Doncaster, SPFL chief executive, said: “The level of competition across the SPFL is extremely high and the launch of our top goalscorer awards will add even more excitement and rightly recognise the country’s top finishers across all four leagues.

“Over the years, we’ve seen a number of fantastic goalscorers find the back of the net, and we look forward to celebrating this year’s achievements at the end of the season with our Tartan Ball and Tartan Boot awards.”

Sean Kavanagh, Global Director of Sports Marketing and Sponsorship at Mitre, said: “The Tartan Ball and Tartan Boot awards are fantastic recognition of the top scorers in the division and it’s great for us to be able to support this and further enhance our partnership.

“With the Premiership games returning this week, the action will come thick and fast until the end of the season so we’re looking forward to seeing who tops the goal charts in May.”
