Unwanted penalty record at Berwick

The penalty given away by Berwick Rangers defender Dean Hoskins in Saturday’s 4-0 defeat at Annan equalled a record that has stood for 50 years

The penalty given away by Berwick Rangers defender Dean Hoskins in Saturday’s 4-0 defeat at Annan equalled a record that has stood for 50 years.

The spot-kick, which was converted by Ally Love, was the 10th penalty netted against the Shielfield side and that matches the total set in 1963/64.

A club spokesperson said: “Fifty years ago we conceded seven penalty goals in the league, two in the Scottish Cup and one in the League Cup. On two occasions, two penalties were given away – against Falkirk in a Scottish Cup defeat and at Arbroath in the league.

“This season we have conceded seven in the league, with two in the one game against Elgin City, two in the Scottish Cup and one in the Challenge Cup.

“With nine games left, and possibly the play-offs, we may add to a record we do not really want.”
