Rangers Celtic Premier Sports Cup

Viaplay Cup final preview in numbers

Resident statto @splstats looks at some of the numbers from the weekend...

12 - Rangers are aiming to win the Viaplay Cup for the first time in 12 years, having last secured the trophy with a 2-1 extra-time win over Celtic in 2010/11. The Light Blues remain the most successful club in the competition's history, having won the League Cup 27 times in total. Rangers have lost just eight times in the final, giving them a final success rate of 77%, however they did lose their last final against Celtic in 2019/20.

6 - Defending champions Celtic have won the Viaplay Cup in five of the last six seasons, and a win on Sunday would make it six wins out of seven, something no club has ever achieved in the history of the competition. Celtic have won each of their last six League Cup finals – the last side to beat them at this stage was Kilmarnock in 2012. Overall, the Hoops have a 57% success rate in League Cup finals, having won 20 and lost 15.

1 - Celtic have lost just one of their last six matches against Rangers in all competitions, including a win and a draw in this season's meetings. However, that defeat came in their last meeting at Hampden - last season's Scottish Cup semi-final - when the Ibrox side won 2-1 after extra time. Indeed, the Hoops have won just one of their last seven matches against Rangers away from Celtic Park.

16 - This will be the 16th time Rangers and Celtic have met in the Viaplay Cup final, with Rangers having the upper hand in the previous meetings, with nine wins to Celtic’s six. The most recent meeting came in the 2019/20 final, when Celtic won 1-0, while Rangers’ last win over their rivals at this stage was in 2010/11. Overall, the sides have met exactly 50 times in the League Cup, and the head-to-head is evenly poised, with 24 wins each and two draws.

4 - There are currently five players tied as top goalscorer in this season's Viaplay Cup, with Jonah Ayunga, Vicente Besuijen, Alex Jakubiak, Conor Sammon and Oli Shaw each having scored four times. As it stands, this would be the lowest tally for the competition's top scorers since 2015/16, when three players were tied on four goals. No current Rangers or Celtic player has scored more than two goals in this season's competition, with Celtic's Liel Abada and Daizen Maeda and Rangers' Scott Arfield needing to score a hat-trick to overhaul the current leaders.
