Weekend in numbers

Resident statto @splstats looks at some of the numbers from the weekend...

5 – Celtic defeated Rangers 2-0 at Ibrox to win the first Glasgow derby of the season and move three points clear in the Ladbrokes Premiership title race. Odsonne Edouard opened the scoring before Jonny Hayes secured the victory in stoppage time. Edouard’s goal was his fifth against Rangers since joining Celtic in 2017, three of which were the opening goal of the game. Since Henrik Larsson (15 goals) left the club in 2004, only four Celtic players have scored five or more goals against Rangers:

Moussa Dembele – 7
Odsonne Edouard – 5
Gary Hooper – 5
Tom Rogic – 5

6 – Kilmarnock moved into the top six of the Ladbrokes Premiership thanks to a 1-0 victory over St Johnstone at McDiarmid Park on Saturday. Scotland defender Stephen O’Donnell grabbed the only goal to give Angelo Alessio his first league victory – O’Donnell has scored twice in the Premiership already, having previously only scored two league goals in two seasons. Killie are now unbeaten on their last six visits to McDiarmid Park, winning five and drawing one, and conceding just a single goal in the process. Saints’ last victory over Killie in Perth was in November 2015, when Gary Locke was in charge of the Ayrshire side.

09/01/2016 – St Johnstone 0-1 Kilmarnock
15/10/2016 – St Johnstone 0-2 Kilmarnock
25/02/2017 – St Johnstone 0-2 Kilmarnock
02/12/2017 – St Johnstone 1-2 Kilmarnock
24/11/2018 – St Johnstone 0-0 Kilmarnock
31/08/2019 – St Johnstone 0-1 Kilmarnock

6 – Dundee United secured the bragging rights in the City of Discovery by thumping Dundee 6-2 at Tannadice in the Ladbrokes Championship on Friday night. The Terrors are now unbeaten in nine home matches against their neighbours – Dundee’s last win at Tannadice was back in August 2004. Robbie Neilson’s men are one of just two sides in the SPFL who still have a 100% record; this is the first time since 1983/84 that they have won their opening four league matches. Friday’s win was just the sixth time that Dundee United have defeated their rivals by four or more goals:

11/09/1965 – Dundee 0-5 Dundee United
30/01/1980 – Dundee United 5-1 Dundee
03/04/1985 – Dundee United 4-0 Dundee
20/04/1993 – Dundee 0-4 Dundee United
01/01/2015 – Dundee United 6-2 Dundee
30/08/2019 – Dundee United 6-2 Dundee

4 – East Fife defeated Raith Rovers 4-2 to move to within a point of their rivals at the summit of Ladbrokes League 1. Darren Young’s side defeated Airdrieonians 4-1 last time out – they have scored four goals in back-to-back matches for the first time since March 2016, when they defeated Annan Athletic 4-2 and Stirling Albion 6-0 on their way to the League 2 title. Saturday’s victory was just the fourth time the Fifers have scored four or more goals against Rovers at Methil in a national competition:

06/10/1934 – East Fife 4-2 Raith Rovers
24/08/1946 – East Fife 4-4 Raith Rovers
05/09/1970 – East Fife 5-1 Raith Rovers
31/08/2019 – East Fife 4-2 Raith Rovers

6 – Cowdenbeath climbed to third in Ladbrokes League 2 thanks to a 2-1 victory over Brechin City at Central Park. Gary Bollan’s side have won all three of their home league matches this season, but have lost both away fixtures. The Blue Brazil have won each of their last six home league matches against City, and have not lost a league game against them in Fife since 2008. Curiously enough, Cowden have failed to win any of the three home matches against Brechin in other competitions in the same period – they drew 0-0 in the play-offs in May 2010, lost 2-0 in the play-offs in 2011 and lost 3-1 in the Challenge Cup in 2014.

24/04/2010 – Cowdenbeath 4-0 Brechin City
13/08/2011 – Cowdenbeath 3-1 Brechin City
25/02/2012 – Cowdenbeath 2-1 Brechin City
14/11/2015 – Cowdenbeath 3-0 Brechin City
09/04/2016 – Cowdenbeath 2-1 Brechin City
31/08/2019 – Cowdenbeath 2-1 Brechin City
