Weekend in numbers

Resident statto @splstats looks at some of the key numbers behind the weekend games in the SPFL and Scottish Cup...

3 – Hibernian moved into the quarter-finals of the Scottish Cup thanks to a 4-1 victory over Lowland League side BSC Glasgow at the Indodrill Stadium. Marc McNulty got off the mark in his second spell with three goals, and Greg Docherty rounded things off with his first for the club. McNulty is the second Hibs player to score a hat-trick in this season’s competition – Christian Doidge netted a treble against Dundee United in the previous round. It was McNulty’s first hat-trick since he hit one for Coventry against Cheltenham Town in English League 2 in April 2018, and his first in Scottish football since November 2012, when he scored three for Livingston against Morton.

23/11/2013 – Greenock Morton 1-5 Livingston (Ladbrokes Championship)
09/02/2020 – BSC Glasgow 1-4 Hibernian (Scottish Cup)

9 – St Johnstone beat Ayr United 2-1 at Somerset Park to reach the Scottish Cup quarter-finals for the first time since they won the tournament back in 2014. Tommy Wright’s side fell behind to an early Aaron Drinan goal, but an Aaron Muirhead own goal levelled things up before Callum Hendry netted the winner. Saints are now unbeaten in their last nine matches against The Honest Men in all competitions, a run which stretches back to 2003.

12 – Dundee climbed back into the final promotion play-off spot in the Ladbrokes Championship thanks to a 2-0 victory over Partick Thistle at the Kilmac Stadium at Dens Park. It was no real surprise to see a decisive result in this fixture – the last draw was over four years ago – in the last 12 meetings they have six victories apiece, including successes in each of the last two for the Dee. Kane Hemmings netted a double to take his tally to nine league goals for the season – he is now joint third in the Ladbrokes Championship goalscoring chart.

4 – Raith Rovers moved four points clear at the top of Ladbrokes League 1 after a 1-1 draw with Stranraer at Stair Park on Saturday. John McGlynn’s looked like going six ahead of Falkirk following John Baird’s opener, but Ryan Stevenson equalised to secure a point for the home side. Rovers have taken 22 points away from home this season, more than any other side in the division, but this is the second time they have slipped up against bottom side Stranraer. Indeed, the Blues are now unbeaten in their last four home matches against Raith.

3 – Elgin City shocked Ladbrokes League 2 leaders Cove Rangers 3-0 at Borough Briggs to keep themselves in the final promotion play-off spot. Gavin Price’s side are two points behind third-placed Cowdenbeath and two ahead of fifth-placed Queen’s Park, although they have played more matches than both. Saturday’s win was a third on the bounce for Elgin, as they look to finally end a 20-season stay in the fourth tier of Scottish football since joining from the Highland League in 2000.
