Weekend in numbers

Resident statto @splstats looks at some of the numbers from the weekend...

4 – Heart of Midlothian defeated Rangers 1-0 at Tynecastle to move into the semi-finals of the Scottish Cup. The Jam Tarts reached the final of last year’s competition and will be looking to go one better this time around. Saturday’s victory extended their unbeaten home run in the Scottish Cup to 11 matches – they have not lost in the cup at Tynecastle since November 2014. Hearts have now won each of their last four home Scottish Cup matches against Rangers, with their last defeat coming back in 1957.

The Hoops are still on course for a fourth consecutive treble and have now recorded 34 consecutive victories in domestic cup competitions. The last team to beat Celtic in a cup competition was Rangers in the 2015/16 Scottish Cup semi-final. Sunday’s success was Celtic’s eighth consecutive victory over the Saints, and they have not conceded a goal in their last 10 meetings.

Kevin Nisbet opened the scoring with his 23rd goal of the season before Celtic loanee Jonathan Afolabi sealed the points. The Pars finally ended a lengthy wait for a home win against the Terrors - their last success was back in April 2007, when Tony Blair was still Prime Minister. In the 13 years since, Dunfermline had hosted United 10 times, drawing three and losing seven.

4 – Montrose kept their promotion hopes alive with a 1-0 victory over Airdrieonians at Links Park. The Gable Endies remain in fifth place in Ladbrokes League 1, four points behind both Airdrie and East Fife, but with two games in hand. Stewart Petrie’s side have won eight of their last 10 home matches, with their only defeats coming against the top two in the division. They have picked up four home wins out of four in 2020, which is their best run since they were promoted in 2018.

Kevin Rutkiewicz’ side are in sixth place in the table but only two points behind fourth-placed Elgin City and three behind Queen’s Park in third. Saturday’s victory was the Binos’ sixth consecutive away win, which is their best run of away league victories since the 2005/06 season – they are now just one short of equalling their club record. Stirling’s excellent away form has been particularly important given that they have simultaneously lost five home games in a row.
