Weekend in numbers

Resident statto @splstats looks at some of the numbers from the weekend...

8 – Rangers remain nine points clear at the top of the Premiership after thrashing Hamilton Academical 8-0 at Ibrox on Sunday. It was the Gers’ biggest win since they defeated Stenhousemuir by the same scoreline in League 1 in September 2013. The last time Rangers won a top-flight match by an eight-goal margin was back in December 1967, when Sir Alex Ferguson scored a hat-trick in a 10-2 victory over Raith Rovers. Accies were also on the receiving end the last time any club scored eight in a Premiership match – that was when they lost 8-1 to Celtic in January 2016.

3 – Celtic defeated Motherwell 4-1 at Fir Park to bounce back from their midweek European defeat to Sparta Prague. The Hoops are now unbeaten in their last 18 matches against the Steelmen in all competitions, with Motherwell’s last win coming back in December 2015. Mohamed Elyounoussi netted three goals, becoming the first Norwegian player to score a hat-trick in the Scottish top flight since Tore Andre Flo for Rangers away to Dundee United in September 2001. The last Celtic player to score a hat-trick at Fir Park was John Hartson, in a 4-4 draw in July 2005.

5 – Raith Rovers climbed to the top of the Championship table thanks to a 5-0 victory over Greenock Morton at Stark’s Park. John McGlynn’s side have picked up three wins and a draw in their opening four league fixtures on their return to the second tier – but it should be noted they made an identical start in their relegation season in 2016/17. This was Rovers’ biggest Championship victory since 2012 – that was also a 5-0 win over Morton, when Brian Graham (2), John Baird, Jamie Walker and Iain Williamson got the goals.

5 – Airdrieonians thumped Clyde 5-0 at the Penny Cars Stadium in League 1 thanks to goals from Calum Gallagher (2), Dale Carrick (2) and Kyle Connell. Airdrie scored five times in a game for the first time in over six years – the last time they did so was a 5-1 victory over Forfar Athletic in March 2014. You have to go back another six years to find the last time Airdrie won a league match by a five-goal margin – a 5-0 victory over Morton in August 2008.

0 – Queen’s Park moved two points clear at the top of League 2 courtesy of a 1-0 victory over Elgin City at Borough Briggs. The Spiders have yet to concede a goal in the league; this is just the second time in their history they have started a league season with four straight clean sheets, with the other coming in 2000/01. In the 27 seasons the fourth tier has been in existence, only two other sides have kept four clean sheets in their opening four fixtures – Albion Rovers in 1996/97 and Hamilton Academical in 2000/01.
