Weekend in numbers

Resident statto @splstats looks at some of the numbers from the weekend...

10 – Dundee defeated Motherwell 1-0 at the Kilmac Stadium to seal their place in the last eight of the Premier Sports Cup. Lee Ashcroft scored the only goal to hand James McPake’s side the victory and set up a Tayside derby against St Johnstone in the quarter-final. The victory ended the Dark Blues’ run of 10 matches without a win over Motherwell – they had lost nine and drawn one since they last beat the Steelmen in April 2017. This is just the second time in 12 years that Dundee have reached the quarter-finals of the League Cup – they made it this far in 2017/18 but were knocked out by Celtic.

39 – Rangers cruised into the quarter-finals of the Premier Sports Cup thanks to a 5-0 victory over Dunfermline Athletic at Ibrox. Steven Gerrard’s side raced into a 3-0 lead within 20 minutes thanks to goals from John Lundstram, Scott Wright and Ianis Hagi, before a Kemar Roofe double rounded off a comprehensive win. The Light Blues are unbeaten in their last 39 home matches against the Pars, racking up 36 wins and three draws with an aggregate scoreline of 122-17. Dunfermline’s last win over Rangers at Ibrox was back in April 1972, when Jim Leishman scored the winning goal for the Pars in a 4-3 victory.

27 – Raith Rovers defeated Aberdeen 2-1 at Stark’s Park to move into the quarter-finals of the Premier Sports Cup. Ethan Varian and Dario Zanatta scored the goals as John McGlynn’s men came from behind to ensure they are the only Championship club in the last eight. It is the first time Rovers have made it to this stage of the League Cup in 27 years – the last time was when they won the competition in 1994/95. This was Raith’s first win against top-flight opposition since they defeated Hibernian 3-2 at Easter Road in February 2014.

7 – Falkirk beat Airdrieonians 2-1 at the Penny Cars Stadium to keep themselves level on points at the top of cinch League 1. Callumn Morrison and Aidan Keena gave the Bairns a 2-0 lead, and they survived the dismissal of Steven Hetherington and a goal from Gabby McGill to secure the three points. It ended Falkirk’s run of seven away matches without a win – they hadn’t picked up a victory on the road since they defeated Forfar Athletic 2-0 in March. It was also the Bairns’ first win over Airdrie in seven attempts – they had lost four and drawn two against the Diamonds since their last victory back in March 2013.

3 – Elgin City picked up their first cinch League 2 victory of the season with a 3-0 success against Albion Rovers at Borough Briggs. Kane Hester scored all three goals for City, taking his tally to seven in eight matches this season. It was Hester’s third hat-trick in the last nine months – he also scored trebles against Cowdenbeath in November and Queen’s Park in May.
