Weekend in numbers

Resident statto @splstats looks at some of the numbers from the weekend...

3 – St Johnstone beat Kilmarnock 3-0 at the BBSP Stadium, Rugby Park to pick up their first points of the William Hill Premiership season. A first-half double from Adama Sidibeh and a Benjamin Kimpioka penalty handed Craig Levein’s side an impressive victory on the road. It was Saints’ biggest away league win in over three years, since they defeated Motherwell by the same scoreline at Fir Park in February 2021 – the goalscorers that day were Guy Melamed (2) and Jason Kerr. It’s just the fourth time they have won by three or more goals at Rugby Park – the last time was a 3-0 victory in December 1988, with Tommy Coyle, Willie Watters and Grant Jenkins on the scoresheet.

3 – Dundee picked up their first league win of the William Hill Premiership season with an impressive 3-1 victory over Heart of Midlothian at the Scot Foam Stadium at Dens Park. Goals from Scott Tiffoney and Luke McCowan plus a Gerald Taylor own goal inside the first half helped Tony Docherty’s side to a comfortable victory. The Dee have been in incredible goalscoring form at the start of the season, netting 23 goals from their opening six matches in all competitions with nine different players finding the net. Saturday’s game was the first time in over seven years that Dundee had scored three times in the first half of a Premiership fixture - the last time was a 5-1 victory over Motherwell at Fir Park in February 2017, when all the goals were scored in the first 45 minutes.

5 – Ayr United thrashed Airdrieonians 5-0 at Somerset Park on Friday night to continue their perfect start to their William Hill Championship campaign. Doubles from Jay Henderson and Anton Dowds plus a goal from George Oakley made it two wins out of two in the league for Scott Brown’s side. The last time the Honest Men won their first two matches of a second tier campaign was back in 2001/02 under Gordon Dalziel. Ayr have now won seven matches in a row against Airdrie with an 18-5 aggregate scoreline - their last defeat was back in December 2017.

1 – Annan Athletic continued their 100% start to the William Hill League 1 season with a 1-0 victory over Inverness Caledonian Thistle at Galabank. A Tommy Goss penalty was enough to separate the sides and ensure that Willie Gibson’s men are the only team in the division with six points out of six. This is the first time since 2011/12 that the Galabankies have won their opening two league matches. Including the end of last season, Annan have lost just one of their last 12 league matches. Saturday’s match was the first ever league meeting of these sides – it is the 1,824th different fixture to be played in the Scottish Leagues since they started in 1890.

2 – Peterhead defeated Forfar Athletic 2-1 at Balmoor to continue their perfect start to the William Hill League 2 season. Rory McAllister’s opener was cancelled out by Forfar’s Jackson Mylchreest but a stoppage-time winner from Seb Ross ensured the Blue Toon took all three points. McAllister has now scored in 20 consecutive seasons of Scottish football – his first goal came for Inverness Caledonian Thistle against Ayr United in the 2005/06 Scottish Cup, and he has found the net in every campaign since, racking up a total of 320 goals in all competitions. The 37-year-old has now scored 249 league goals – 167 of which have come for Peterhead across three different spells. This is just the fourth time Peterhead have won their opening two league matches of an SFL/SPFL campaign – the last time was in 2017/18.
