Weekend in Numbers

Resident statto @splstats brings us the tales from the William Hill SPFL

6 – Celtic thumped St Johnstone 6-0 at McDiarmid Park to continue their perfect start to the William Hill Premiership season. A double from Kyogo Furuhashi and goals from Paulo Bernardo, Callum McGregor, Daizen Maeda and Adam Idah made it nine wins out of nine for the Hoops in all competitions. Celtic have yet to concede a league goal this season – this is just the fifth time in Scottish league history that a club has kicked off a campaign with six consecutive clean sheets. Two of the previous four were in the top flight – Celtic in 1906/07 and Rangers in 2020/21, while the others were St Johnstone in the second tier in 2002/03 and Airdrie in the third tier in 1973/74. Celtic have also scored five goals in three consecutive matches in all competitions – the last time they did this was back in November and December 1984.

6 – Aberdeen also retained their 100% record in the William Hill Premiership by defeating Dundee 2-1 at the Scot Foam Stadium at Dens Park. First-half goals from Kevin Nisbet and Topi Keskinen were enough for Jimmy Thelin’s side to make it six wins out of six in the league. This is just the second time in their history that the Dons have won their opening six league games – they also did so in 2015/16, when they would also go on to win their seventh game. Aberdeen have 12 wins out of 12 in all competitions since the start of the season – this is their second best winning run of all time, and they are now just three short of the club record of 15, set by Eddie Turnbull’s side between October 1970 and January 1971.

8 – Ayr United defeated Greenock Morton 1-0 at Somerset Park to continue their unbeaten start to the William Hill Championship campaign. Jay Henderson’s penalty was enough to move Scott Brown’s side three points clear at the top of the table. With Falkirk’s long unbeaten league run finally coming to an end, Ayr and Livingston are the only remaining undefeated sides left in the division. This is the first time since 1987/88 that the Honest Men have avoided defeat in their opening eight league games – that season would end with them winning the SFL 2nd Division title. Saturday’s win ended Ayr’s run of eight home matches without a win over Morton – they had drawn five and lost three since their last win in August 2019.

6 – Queen of the South moved to the top of the William Hill League 1 table thanks to a 2-0 victory over Dumbarton at Palmerston. Goals from Lewis O’Donnell and Michael Hewitt helped Peter Murphy’s side take advantage of the draw between Alloa Athletic and Montrose to climb above both in the table. Queens have won all four of their home league matches this season, having also won their final two last season – this run of six home league wins is their best since March-August 2015. The Doonhamers are now unbeaten in their last seven matches against the Sons in all competitions, they have five wins and two draws since their last defeat in April 2017.

1 – East Fife defeated Spartans 1-0 at Ainslie Park to climb to the top of the William Hill League 2 table. Nathan Austin’s 10th goal of the season in all competitions was enough to hand Dick Campbell’s side all three points. Austin has seven goals in eight league matches, making him the leading SPFL goalscorer, one ahead of his East Fife team-mate Alan Trouten and Edinburgh City’s Connor Young. The Fifers have still never lost an away match against Spartans – East Fife have two wins and two draws against them in Edinburgh since they first met in a Scottish Cup tie at City Park in 1996.
