Weekend in numbers

Resident statto @splstats looks at some of the numbers from the weekend...

1 – Queen’s Park recorded one of the biggest Scottish Cup shocks of all time, beating Rangers 1-0 at Ibrox to progress to the quarter-finals. Seb Drozd scored the only goal of the game after 69 minutes, just two minutes after coming off the bench, and goalkeeper Calum Ferrie saved a stoppage-time penalty from James Tavernier to secure the victory. It was the Spiders’ first win over Rangers since 1948, and the first time they’d beaten their city rivals in the Scottish Cup since 1882. Queen’s Park are 10-time Scottish Cup winners but this is the first time since 1982/83 that they have reached the last eight. This was Rangers’ first ever home defeat in the Scottish Cup to a side in a lower division – they had won 65 and drawn six of the previous 71 games. Queen’s Park manager Callum Davidson also triumphed at Ibrox in the Scottish Cup as St Johnstone boss – the only other managers to knock Rangers out of the cup twice at Ibrox are Willie Maley (Celtic, 1906/07 and 1907/08) and Archie Knox (Dundee, 1983/84 and 1984/85).

11 – Hibernian defeated Ayr United 1-0 at Somerset Park to move into the quarter-finals of the Scottish Cup. A late Rocky Bushiri goal ensured that the Hibees reached the last eight for the fifth time in six seasons. The victory extends David Gray’s side’s unbeaten run to 11 matches in all competitions – they have eight wins and three draws since losing to Celtic in early December. Hibs are now unbeaten in their last 13 Scottish Cup matches against lower-league opposition – their last defeat came against Ayr at Somerset Park in 2011.

5 – Falkirk thumped Partick Thistle 5-2 at the Falkirk Stadium to go back to the top of the William Hill Championship. Scott Arfield marked his return to the Bairns with a sensational hat-trick, with Gary Oliver and Leon McCann also on the scoresheet. This was Arfield’s first appearance for Falkirk in nearly 15 years – he started his career at the club but left in May 2010 to join Huddersfield Town. It was the second hat-trick of Arfield’s career – he also scored all three goals in Rangers’ 3-0 win over Motherwell in April 2019. The Bairns are now unbeaten in their last five meetings with Thistle in all competitions – they have three wins and two draws since their last defeat in April 2021.

0 – Arbroath defeated Inverness Caledonian Thistle 3-0 at The Greenversity Stadium at Gayfield thanks to goals from Aaron Steele, Andy Winter and Ryan Dow. The victory means David Gold’s and Colin Hamilton’s side remain a point off the top of William Hill League 1, with two games in hand over leaders Stenhousemuir. Arbroath have yet to concede a goal in four meetings with the Caley Jags in all competitions this season and have been increasingly dominant in these matches as the season has gone on. The sides drew 0-0 in the Premier Sports Cup group stage, then the Red Lichties have won 1-0, 2-0 and 3-0 in League 1.

7 – Peterhead triumphed in a seven-goal thriller at New Dundas Park, beating Bonnyrigg Rose 4-3 to remain four points off the top of William Hill League 2. Oliver Colloty, Kieran Shanks and Max Barry helped the Blue Toon to a 3-1 lead inside half an hour, but Bonnyrigg pulled it back to 3-3 before Cammy Smith scored a dramatic late winner. This is the second time this season that the Blue Toon have won a match despite conceding three goals – they also beat Lochee United 6-3 in the Scottish Cup in October. Peterhead have still never lost to Bonnyrigg in a competitive match – the sides have now met seven times, with Peterhead winning four and drawing three.
