Weekend in numbers

Resident statto @splstats looks at some of the numbers from the weekend...

3 – Rangers defeated Celtic 3-2 at Celtic Park in the William Hill Premiership to continue their perfect away record under Barry Ferguson. First-half goals from Nicolas Raskin and Mohamed Diomande were cancelled out by Daizen Maeda and Reo Hatate but Hamza Igamane scored a dramatic late winner. It was Rangers’ first win at Celtic Park in nine attempts – their last victory in the East End of Glasgow was in October 2020. Ferguson is the first Rangers manager to win on their first visit to Celtic Park since Walter Smith in August 1991, when Mark Hateley scored a double in a 2-0 victory. Smith also won on the first visit of his second spell at the club in March 2007, with Ferguson in the team that day.

13 – Dundee boosted their William Hill Premiership survival chances, and secured city bragging rights, thanks to a 4-2 victory over Dundee United at Tannadice. A Jordan McGhee double and goals from Scott Tiffoney and Simon Murray handed Tony Docherty’s side a crucial victory which moves them five points clear of bottom side St Johnstone, and to within one point of Kilmarnock in 10th. The Dark Blues ended a run of 13 derbies without a win at Tannadice – their last victory there was over 20 years ago, when Steve Lovell and John Sutton scored in a 2-1 win in August 2004. It was the first time Dundee had scored four times away from home in a derby since 1984, when Derek McWilliams, Tosh McKinlay, Colin Harris and John Brown all found the net in a 4-3 win.

7 – Falkirk thumped Queen’s Park 4-0 at Hampden as they took a major step closer to securing the William Hill Championship title. Goals from Liam Henderson, Gary Oliver, Calvin Miller and Tom Lang gave John McGlynn’s side a big victory which moved them eight points clear of Livingston with just seven matches remaining. This was Falkirk’s biggest away win in the Championship in almost a decade, since they defeated Dumbarton 5-0 in October 2015. The Bairns are unbeaten in their last seven league matches, winning five and drawing two, and have kept three consecutive clean sheets for the first time this season. Falkirk extended their unbeaten run against Queen’s Park to seven matches in all competitions – their last defeat was a 6-0 humbling at Firhill in December 2021.

1 – Annan Athletic secured a crucial victory in the battle for survival in William Hill League 1, defeating Inverness CT 1-0 at the Caledonian Stadium. An early goal from Paul Smith was enough to hand Willie Gibson’s 9th-placed side a victory which moves them to within just two points of their opponents in 8th, and just three behind Montrose in 7th. This was Annan’s first clean sheet in 19 matches in all competitions, since they beat Queen of the South 1-0 in October. Saturday’s success was the Galabankies’ first win over the Caley Jags in Inverness – they had lost on each of their three previous visits.

2 – Peterhead defeated Edinburgh City 2-0 at Balmoor to move level on points at the top of William Hill League 2. Max Barry and Oliver Colloty scored the goals for the Blue Toon to ensure they took advantage of East Fife’s surprise 3-0 defeat to Stranraer. Jordon Brown and Ryan Strachan have led their side to a seven-match unbeaten run, which has helped them eat up a five-point gap to the Fifers. Peterhead have kept four consecutive clean sheets in the league for the first time in over a decade – the last time they did so was in March and April 2014 as Jim McInally’s side secured the League 2 title.
