Weekend in numbers

Resident statto @splstats looks at some of the numbers from the weekend...

21 – Celtic defeated St Johnstone 5-0 at Hampden on Sunday to cruise into the Scottish Cup final. Two goals from Daizen Maeda and one apiece from Callum McGregor, Adam Idah and Jota ensured the Hoops remain on course for another treble. Brendan Rodgers has still never lost a Scottish Cup tie – he has won all 21 ties in the competition, including seven at Hampden. This was the biggest winning margin in a Scottish Cup semi-final in 25 years, since Rangers defeated Ayr United 7-0 in the 2000 semi-final. The Hoops will face Aberdeen in the final on May 24 after the Dons defeated Heart of Midlothian 2-1 after extra-time in Saturday’s first semi-final.

5 – Livingston kept their William Hill Championship title hopes alive by thumping Ayr United 5-0 at the Home of the Set Fare Arena on Friday. A Stephen Kelly double and goals from Robbie Muirhead, Cristian Montano and Reece McAlear moved David Martindale’s side to within three points of leaders Falkirk and also guaranteed at least a top-two finish. This was Livi’s biggest league win in over six years, since they defeated Heart of Midlothian by the same scoreline in December 2018. The Lions are unbeaten in their eight home league matches in 2025 – they have six wins and two draws, with their last defeat coming against Ayr in December.

8 – Raith Rovers left it late to defeat Falkirk 3-1 at the Falkirk Stadium and boost their chances of a top-four finish in the William Hill Championship. Barry Robson’s side trailed with three minutes to go, but Aiden Marsh scored an 88th-minute equaliser before Paul Hanlon and Dylan Easton both netted in stoppage time to secure an unlikely win. Rovers are now level on points with Partick Thistle with two games to go in the race for the final play-off spot and only trail by three goals on goal difference. Raith are unbeaten in their last eight matches, winning four and drawing four – this run includes matches against all of the top four.

5 – Annan Athletic boosted their William Hill League 1 survival hopes by thrashing champions Arbroath 5-1 at Galabank. Paul Smith opened the scoring before Tommy Muir and Luca Ross both netted doubles to hand Willie Gibson’s side a massive victory. The Galabankies remain in ninth place but are now just a point behind Inverness Caledonian Thistle with two matches remaining. This is Annan’s third 5-1 win of the season, but the other two came away from home (v Dumbarton in the league & Stranraer in the SPFL Trust Trophy). The last time they scored five or more times at Galabank was in May 2023, when they beat Dumbarton 6-0 in the League 1 play-off semi-final.

4 – Elgin City thumped Peterhead 4-0 at Borough Briggs to keep themselves in pole position for a top-four finish in William Hill League 2. Jack Murray, Russell Dingwall, Ryan Sargent and Dylan Gavin were all on target as Allan Hale’s side shocked the league leaders to remain three points clear of Spartans in the race for the final promotion play-off spot. The Black and Whites won three of the four league meetings between the sides this season and have lost just one of the last seven in the league against Peterhead.
