10 days to go

Resident statto @splstats begins his countdown to the 2022/23 league season...

  • The 2022/23 campaign will be the 10th season of the SPFL, which was formed after a merger of the Scottish Premier League and Scottish Football League in the summer of 2013. Across the nine previous seasons there have been a total of 18,074 SPFL goals scored across 6,551 matches. The first league goal was scored by Aberdeen’s Jonny Hayes against Kilmarnock.
  • This will be Ross County’s 10th season in the cinch Premiership. The Staggies first played in the SPL in 2012/13 - they were relegated in 2017/18 but immediately bounced back as cinch Championship winners.
  • Queen’s Park have returned to the cinch Championship for the first time in 39 years after gaining promotion via the play-offs last season. The 10-time Scottish Cup winners last played in the second tier back in 1982/83 and since then have spent all but six seasons in the bottom tier. It was only nine years ago that the Spiders finished bottom of the entire SPFL – they were 10th in League 2 in 2013/14.
  • Airdrieonians will be competing in cinch League 1 for the 10th consecutive season after narrowly missing out on promotion last season. The Diamonds are by far the longest-serving side in the division – the next closest are Montrose, who are gearing up for their fifth year at this level. New Airdrie boss Rhys McCabe is the youngest manager in the SPFL – the player-manager turns 30 this weekend.
  • Peterhead boss Jim McInally is the longest-serving manager in the SPFL – McInally has been in charge of the Blue Toon for 10 years and 286 days, having been appointed in October 2011. McInally’s side are competing in cinch League 1 for the fourth consecutive season – they have finished 8th, 7th and 7th since being promoted as cinch League 2 champions in 2018/19.
