River City actor Simon Weir’s one man crusade to bring Third Lanark’s old ground of Cathkin Park in the south side of Glasgow back to life has reached another milestone. Weir, who has already repainted the perimeter wall that separates the pitch from the terracing that was last used in 1967 when the club folded, has now brought the 64 crash barriers at the ground a vivid landscape.
The barriers have been painted a bright scarlet red to match the jerseys worn by the Hi-Hi with Weir saying, “It is another step forward in my dream of bringing this ground back to life. It is a piece of Victorian Sporting history that everyone in Scotland should be proud of.”
Weir has now bought the naming rights to Third Lanark and registered their badge as a trademark and has enlisted a local Boys club to help bring back the Third Lanark name to Cathkin. Weir said, “I am in discussions with the council over a 25 year lease and hopefully they have been impressed with the work that has been carried out so far.”
A number of football fans have been popping in, including several Berwick Rangers fans on their way to Hampden to watch their side against Queen’s Park and a visitor from Italy that read scottishfootballleague.com, to see Simon carry out as his work at Cathkin.
He would be disappointed if anyone popped in and he was not there so if anyone would like more details about his work please e-mail [email protected]
