Christmas Day football

From the Archives - Season 1976/77 saw the last Christmas Day football...

Most of the card was switched but two games went ahead on Saturday December 25, 1976.

St Mirren and Clydebank, first and second in the First Division, attracted a crowd of 7,500 to Kilbowie Park for a 2-2 draw while Alloa Athletic defeated Cowdenbeath 2-1 at Recreation Park in the Second Division, watched by 731 fans.

Alex Ferguson’s Saints went on to win the title and the Bankies were also promoted to the Premier Division - the teams scored 91 and 89 goals respectively, with the Paisley club finishing four points clear at the top.

Alloa's Christmas victory proved important and they ended the season as runners-up to Second Division champions Stirling Albion, with Dunfermline Athletic third.
